Gourvennec talks down Malcom's Neymar selfie
Girondins de Bordeaux coach Jocelyn Gourvennec has looked to calm the reaction to star forward Malcom’s selfie with compatriot and idol Neymar Jr directly after the Girondins’ 6-2 Week 8 drubbing at the Parc des Princes.
It was a record humiliation for Bordeaux as Paris Saint-Germain stripped them of their unbeaten record for the season with no fewer than five goals in the first half, so when Brazilian prodigy Malcom posed for a selfie with Paris superstar Neymar Jr, it ruffled more than a few feathers in the Girondins‘ camp.
However, Bordeaux boss Jocelyn Gourvennec was circumspect concerning the 20-year-old Brazilian, who has been his main weapon – four goals and four assists – during an excellent start to the season.
“I think it was just a case of a young lad not thinking something through. Who hasn’t done that kind of thing before?” the coach, whose 14-match Ligue 1 Conforama unbeaten run was cut short as his side slipped three places to sixth with the heavy defeat, told French newspaper Sud-Ouest.
“Everyone makes mistakes in the course of a professional career, no matter what their overall body of work is like. The main thing is to make sure not to do it again. I will have a private discussion with Malcom to make sure that this kind of mistake doesn’t happen again.”
